フェリックス・ゴンザレス=トレス/ Felix Gonzalez-Torres(1957-1996)
キューバ生まれ。
1987年に、コミュニティ教育や文化活動における基本に立って共同作業を行うニコラボーレションアート集団「グループ・マテリアル」に参加。そこから芸術家としてのキャリアを大きく伸ばしていく。このグループは、政治やジェンダーの問題に対する強い関心を持っていた。*1
トレスは工業的な素材を扱うが、それらは何千個にも及ぶ飴の集積や紙束で、限りない複製を許される。例えば飴の作品は≪無題(大衆の意見)≫と名づけられ、観衆はそれらを持ち帰る事を許され、変化する飴が変貌する社会や消費文化など、重層的な多くの意味を持ち、見る者の心の奥に眠れる感情を呼び覚ます。また、特定の場所に因んだイメージを広告宣伝用の看板に掲示し、見る者が自己の記憶や感情をそこに投影することで、パブリック・ビルボードがプライヴェートを映す場に変わる。トレスは日用品を用いて身近に感じている問題を問い掛け、時代を共有する人々にある思いを喚起させる。1996年に死去するが、その後も2000年のロンドンとニューヨークの回顧展、2007年のベニスビエンナーレの展示などで国際的に注目を集め、現代美術の重要な作家として現在も広く知られている。*2

解説
無題(世論)(1991)などのコーナーやフロアに広がったラップされたキャンディーの彫刻は、視聴者が作品に触れて消費するように求められているため、美術の世界的な慣行に反する。 1989年からは、写真やテキストが印刷された紙の塊を彫刻し、観客にシートを取るよう促しました。彼らが補充されなければ時間の経過とともに徐々に消えていくこれらの作品の無残は、人生の脆弱性を象徴しています。*3
また1992年に、無題(1991)、2つの不在の体の痕跡と空のゴンザレス・トレス、整えられていないベッドの官能的なモノクロの写真は、ニューヨークの街中で24個の看板に設置されました。この謎めいたイメージはカップリングの祝典と最近エイズで亡くなった恋人の記念碑の両方の意味がありました。メランコリックな市民規模の記念碑としての設置は、民間行動の公的な監視に問題をもたらした。 *4
僕が「無題(偽の薬)」を作ったのはそれを作る必要があったからだよ。その作品が消えて、存在しなかったという状態を作りたかったという以外に理由はないんだ。ロスが死んでいくという例えだったんだ。だから、作品が僕自身を放棄する前に、僕が作品を放棄したのだろう。作品が僕を破壊する前に、僕が作品を破壊したのだろう。それはこの作品にもたらす僕のちょっとした特権といえる。ずっとそうしたいわけじゃないけど。なぜなら、結局のところ作品は僕を傷つけるわけじゃないからね。 最初から、作品はそこに存在していなかった。僕は存在してないものを作ったんだ。僕はその痛みをコントロールする。それは本当だ。それがこの作品の意味の一部だと思う。もちろん、作品のくだらない誘惑的な側面や、「本物の」アートについての作品であるべきだけど。それは分かっている。でも、その一方で、このことは(ロスのために制作したということは)個人的なレベルでは、とってもリアルなものなんだ。それはインチキ・アーティストであるということを意味しないけど、言い訳でもある。喜びへの言い訳。子供みたいにキャンディーでいっぱいにしたいというね。まず重要なのは、ロスについての作品だったということ。それから、僕自身やその他のみんなを喜ばせたかったということなんだ。*5
2つの輪は、結婚指輪と見なすことができ、永遠の愛や永遠の愛のシンボルや円と数字の8を参照しています。このモチーフ、または2つの同一の円形オブジェクト(ミラー、時計、金属リング、電球など)のものは、ゴンザレス=トレスの作品では、「完璧な恋人」の記号として、2人の身体と意識を表しています。正確な対称性の使用は、同性愛者の愛を暗示します。*6
